Jasmine Thai food cart, New Haven

I am truly stuffed, sated, content. I just experienced an excellent meal – from a food cart. Yeah, I know, right? In this day of poor quality customer service, I was pleasantly surprised by Thai Jasmine over by the Yale Medial School. After a two-hour wait to see someone about my foot bump (yes, Virginia, it IS a tumor), I decided to enjoy the beautiful weather and treat myself to a walk to the food carts in front of the hospital. A colleague introduced me to their cart last fall when it was parked near the courthouse, so my choice was made as soon as I saw the cart.

While the people in front of me were treated to a little extra this and a little extra that, I asked them the obvious question: What’s good? In the end, I had pad thai noodles, ginger tofu and veggies, and some tempura veggies. (Was that sweet potato?!) I ate it all, every last bit of it, with complete abandon, ignoring the unanswered email in front of me. I truly wanted to lick the styrofoam container in which it was presented.

If you ever find yourself near Yale-New Haven Hospital, make your way to the well-known food court on Cedar Street. I’m glad I did. It made an icky few hours totally worth the wait.

Note: The other good news is that the tumor is benign, so no worries.

Find cheaper flights online

As a consummate bargain hunter always looking for the best deal, I realized I know something you may not know. Airfares go down considerably on Tuesday nights. From about 4pm through midnight on Tuesdays, airlines are busy trying to fill seats. Your best bet is to purchase tickets at least 21 days before the day you want to fly. I just paid $169 each for tickets that up until this past Tuesday night have been priced at between $289 and $310! Conservatively that is a $120 savings – enough for a meal or two on our upcoming Disney vacation.

If you enjoy the thrill of the hunt, make Tuesday night your night to hunt for flights for your next vacation.

What are you thankful for this year?

Don’t even get me started this year. Though it has been a difficult year in some ways, I have also seen many blessings. Below are a few of the things I am truly grateful for this year.

My best friend in the world, more like the sister I never had, survived cancer with flying colors. Though she is still undergoing chemo, she is almost finished and they got it all out during surgery.

My husband retired from the Navy in July and is now enjoying his new position at a civilian hospital not too far away. How he found a Monday through Friday Nine-to-Five job, I’ll never know, but he did and he loves it.

My little one started Kindergarten in September and is having a great time and enjoying school, while my older child is a stellar Fourth Grader having passed his CMT’s with advanced and top of the school goal scores.

As for me, I’m ploughing along with the National Novel Writing Month contest (which I should be doing right now!), and gaining writing clients every day. The new blog, Caffeinated Writer, is up and running and time will tell if it is as successful as Writing Military Mom, the other blog.

Plans for the future? I plan on completing my next novel in 2010 and spending more time with my beautiful boys before they grow up and leave home. Life is short and I want to be a full-time novelist “when I grow up.” I am off to move forward on that goal, but wanted to stop for a moment to say Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, near and far. Most of all to the soldiers and sailors serving our country, their families who support them and all of the veterans who have served before them. Thank you a million times for your service to our country.
